Earwicker escapes dog pursuit

Finnegans Wake

Earwicker’s escape from the hounds turns a public pursuit into an inconclusive chase: the pack follows his route through a chain of towns, but he doubles back, disappears into cover, and outlasts them. The episode makes his survival depend not on defeating the hunters but on frustrating their tracking and rebuilding his strength while they search.

The Hunt and Its Route

The pursuit is framed as an evidentiary problem: the hunters hope that the trail will disclose the fugitive, while the narration imagines the assembled evidence as a way of bringing truth to light. Dogs of many breeds are released to run him down, and the chase moves across the Christmas countryside of Humfries Chase. From a hiding place, Earwicker makes his way through Mullinahob and Peacockstown, turns toward Tankardstown, and then passes through Raystown and Horlockstown before returning to Tankardstown. The circuit gives the pursuit its distinctive shape: his route repeatedly folds back on itself rather than leading directly away.

Losing the Hounds

The hounds continue through Cheeverstown, Loughlinstown, and Nutstown, seeking to close in on Earwicker. The narration describes them as trying to wind him by the Boolies, but the decisive turn comes when the scent fails on Ye Hill of Rut in deep winter. In his heavy winter clothing, Earwicker points toward his rooming house; the pursuit loses its certainty, and he is concealed in cover. Rather than presenting a confrontation, the episode makes the disappearance itself the reversal: the pack has followed a long trail, but cannot complete the hunt.

Recovery and Outcome

Earwicker’s escape is followed by an account of recovery. He is sustained by cinnamon syllabub, described in a sequence of extravagant food terms, while his bodily strength returns. The narration credits the re-education of his intestines and a diet kept away from rich gravies and sauces with helping him gain an advantage over his pursuers. The chase therefore ends not with a capture but with the hounds going home, while Earwicker remains hidden and survives through concealment and recuperation.

Narrative Significance

The episode sets the hunters’ collective force against Earwicker’s capacity to evade them. Their dogs, horns, and intricate route suggest a methodical effort to turn scent into proof, yet the chase concludes in a failure to find him. Its looping geography mirrors that frustration: the hunters retrace ground, circle back, and finally lose the trail. The account also treats survival as a process rather than a single escape, linking the end of the pursuit to Earwicker’s recovery and renewed advantage.
